Details
Point Cook is home to a unique residential precinct formed by a man-made island, widely regarded as one of Melbourne’s most desirable coastal locations.
The homeowner wished to make full use of the sea views, extending the refined, high-end character of the house into a low-maintenance yet elegant garden.
Day design
Front yard: With only a 450 mm level change, layered floating steps were introduced. The first step was intentionally raised and lowered to create a stronger sense of depth and arrival.
Entry boundary: A 3 m-wide, 800 mm-high entry wall combined with vertical timber posts provides privacy while complying with estate guidelines that discourage tall front fences.
Backyard: A 1.3 m level change and a 3 m coastal easement limited structural options. Artificial turf, white retaining walls, and permeable sandy pavers were used to protect the footing, enhance the slope, and ensure easy maintenance.
Night design
Arrival lighting: Sensor-activated step and ground lights gently illuminate as residents arrive, creating a welcoming homecoming.
Side yards: Black composite screens, perforated aluminium panels, and wall lights create a relaxed, resort-like atmosphere.
Backyard feature: Soft warm lighting along the white retaining wall becomes a subtle, glowing welcome visible from the bridge at night.
